Areva, also known as AREVA Group, was a French multinational group specializing in nuclear power and renewable energy. It was created in 2001 through the merger of Framatome, Cogema, and Technicatome. Areva was a major player in the nuclear energy industry, offering a wide range of products and services including nuclear reactor design and construction, uranium mining and enrichment, fuel fabrication, and nuclear waste management.
The company provided comprehensive solutions for nuclear power generation, including the design, construction, and maintenance of nuclear reactors, as well as the supply of nuclear fuel and related services. Areva also had a presence in renewable energy, particularly in wind power through its subsidiary Areva Wind.
However, Areva faced significant challenges in the late 2000s and early 2010s, including cost overruns and delays in nuclear reactor construction projects, as well as financial difficulties. In 2016, the French government initiated a restructuring process for Areva, which ultimately led to the sale of its nuclear reactor business to EDF (Électricité de France) and the creation of a new company focused on nuclear fuel cycle activities, named Orano.
